Choosing your first pet: five honest questions

A pet is a commitment of ten to twenty years in many cases. Answer these five questions honestly before you choose.
1. How much time do you really have?
Dogs need several walks a day, training and company. Cats are more independent but still need daily play and attention. Small animals like rabbits need daily care and space. If you are away for long hours, a puppy is rarely a good fit.
2. What does your home allow?
Check your lease, the size of the home and noise rules. A large energetic dog in a small flat can be unhappy. Allergies matter too: spend time with the animal before deciding.
3. What can you afford?
Count food, vet care, vaccines, parasite control, insurance, grooming and an emergency fund. Costs are higher for large dogs and some breeds with known health problems.
4. Who else lives with you?
Talk with everyone at home, including children and other pets. Agree who feeds, walks and pays for what.
5. Who will care when you travel?
Plan for holidays and illness: a trusted friend, a sitter or a boarding place.
