A walk is more than toilet time. It is exercise, sniffing, training and bonding. A few basics make walks easier for everyone.
Gear
- A well-fitted harness or flat collar and a lead of about 1.5 to 2 metres. Avoid extendable leads in busy places.
- Waste bags, and water on warm days.
- ID tag with your phone number, and a registered microchip.
How long and how often
Most adult dogs need two to three outings a day, but the amount depends on age, breed and health. Puppies need shorter, more frequent trips. Let your dog sniff: it tires the brain as much as running tires the body.
Loose-lead walking
- Stop when the lead goes tight. Wait until it slackens, then walk on.
- Reward with a small treat when the dog walks beside you.
- Practise first in quiet places, then in busier ones.
- Be patient and consistent. Never jerk the lead.
Meeting other dogs
Ask the owner before letting dogs greet. Keep the lead loose, because a tight lead raises tension. Watch the body language: a stiff, staring dog needs space.
Safety
- Hot pavement can burn paws. If you cannot hold the back of your hand on it for five seconds, it is too hot.
- Avoid the hottest hours in summer and carry water.
- Keep to local rules about leads, parks and cleaning up.
- Check for ticks after walks in grass.
Record each walk in the pet log to see the pattern of time and distance over weeks.
