Many foods that are safe for people can poison pets. Here are the common ones. The amount, the pet's size and the time since eating all matter, so when in doubt, call a vet.

Common dangers

  • Chocolate and cocoa: dark chocolate is the worst. Causes vomiting, restlessness and in large amounts seizures.
  • Grapes and raisins: can cause kidney failure in dogs, even in small amounts.
  • Xylitol: a sweetener in sugar-free gum, sweets and some peanut butter. Very dangerous for dogs.
  • Onion, garlic, chives: damage red blood cells, especially in cats.
  • Macadamia nuts: weakness and tremors in dogs.
  • Alcohol and raw yeast dough: poisoning and dangerous bloating.
  • Caffeine: coffee, tea and energy drinks.
  • Cooked bones: splinter and can block or cut the gut.

Plants for cats

Lilies are extremely dangerous for cats. Even pollen or vase water can cause kidney failure.

If your pet ate something

  1. Note what, how much and when.
  2. Remove the rest and any packaging.
  3. Call your vet or an animal poison line right away. Do not wait for symptoms and do not induce vomiting unless a vet tells you to.

Prevention

Keep food on high shelves, close bins, and tell guests and children not to share snacks.
